Baby-ghans Begin

As mentioned before I have 2 friends who are due with baby boys in the summer. Last night I got my yarn to start the baby-ghans I'm going to make and give to them as shower gifts. Desiree is actually my best friend's sister and I wouldn't really say she was my friend but she bought a few items for my daughter. Plus I know she'll love the ghan I'm making because I'm not going traditional baby colors. Traditional just isn't her style. Jenn is my (prepare for mouthful here) husband's boss's wife. I was origionally going to make her ghan in a more traditional light blue, light green and white but she was who took me to buy my yarn and she knew I was making something for her baby she just didn't know what but I'm sure she assumed a blanket of some kind. She really liked the colors I chose for Desiree's and told me that they would actually match the baby's room so I now I'm doing 2 very bright baby-ghans.

In the picture this square measures 13 1/2 inches and it's 12 row/rounds so far. This one is going to be Jenn's. To make them a little bit different I'm doing Desiree's black, blue, green (Jenn's is black, green, blue). These are going to be the first items I've made for someone other than my husband and daughter. I'm so excited about it. This is also the first time I've had 2 projects going at the same time. Okay, time to get back to work.

Let the Stash Begin...

... if I don't turn it all into squares first.

I sit here now with about 1/2 a skein of each my colors from my Wavy Blanket. 4 different colors! This excites me because I haven't had leftovers from my previous projects, not much at least. I'm hoping that my husband will take me to get yarn for my baby blankets I'll be crocheting as shower gifts for 2 friends due this summer. Both are expecting baby boys I'm planning to do a simple large granny blanket for both of them but one will be done in traditional baby boy colors and the other one will be black, bright blue and bright green. The non-traditional colored one is for my best friend's sister who is a very punk kind of person and I just know that receiving something for the baby that isn't pastel will thrill her.

FINALLY!!!! I've Finished It.

It's official, I have finally finished my bed sized afghan. I started this afghan November 22, 2009 when I was bored one night and had some leftover white yarn from another project. I found this pattern and fell in love with it. I had to make it and it was going to be the first project that I made for myself. I had no idea what color I was going to do it in other than the white but I knew it had to be girly. My husband took me to get more yarn the next day and I picked my pinkish-rose color (could only afford 1 skein) and went home to proceed with my next row. I still didn't really know what my other colors were going to be yet. When we went to WalMart to get more yarn I told my husband that I was thinking of a teal-ish and brown color for my other color. I thought those would be perfect to go with my pinkish color and when we started looking at what WalMart had we both agreed that my choices were perfect.

Anyways, it took me 3 months to crochet but there were many days where I didn't even touch the afghan. I had it about 2/5 completed within a month but I started to get bored with crocheting for a bit so the second 2/5 of it took almost double what the first bit did. The last week I worked double time because I realized how close I was to finishing it. If I had worked at the speed I did this past week during the entire project I could have made it in 3 weeks. It fits our queen sized bed though I think it would be better on a full/double because I like a good bit of hangover but either way I like it. I had to wash it after I got done with it because it had gotten dirty from drinks being spilled on it but my husband is now covered up with it and sleeping. I haven't even had the chance to taken a picture of it finished on the bed. The picture above was taken earlier in the week and as you can tell it was zoomed in.

Well it's getting late so I'm going to go to bed. To see more information on the afghan visit my ravelry page.

How I started crocheting.

Like most children who have crocheting grandma's my teaching began during a very boring weekend while I was at grandma's. When I was in 3rd grade my parents were moving closer to my grandparents. They went ahead and enrolled me in my new school at the beginning of the school year and I stayed with my grandparents while my parents were waiting for their doublewide to arrive and be set up on the lot. I hardly had any things at my grandparent's house and they only had one tv and no cable. I hadn't made any friends yet and since it was a small country town it wasn't very easy to do so. I was horribly bored after having gone through almost all of my activity books. Grandmas was working on some doilies and she began to teach me how to chain and then single crochet. That didn't last long. I ended up stopping after I moved back in with my parents and the knowledge left my brain.

Move forward in time about 17 years. My husband bought me an "I Taught Myself Crochet" Kit and 2 skeins of Red Heart Super Saver because he remembered hearing me say something about wanting to learn. So it began again and it wasn't pretty. Learning from a book is not easy. My single crochet wasn't what it was supposed to be. I was slip stitching. But I didn't know this. I started to make my daughter a blanket but I was leaving out the turning chain. After I figured that out, I frogged it and started again, turning chain included but still slip stitching. My husband wanted a blanket too so I started one for him, also slip stitching. I got bored and pushed aside the blankets for a while. They were taking way to long to do and I felt like I was getting nowhere. I went on a crochet site and was looking at different stitches when I realized (son or a *****) I wasn't doing it right. I frogged my daughter's blanket and began her's again, the right way this time. My husband didn't want me to start his again. He told me to just start the single crochet on the next row. It was definitely not my proudest project but he likes it and he uses the slip stitched part buy his feet and he says that they stay very warm. So I finished those projects and made a few random items like scarves and now I'm working on my afghan for my bed.

Beginning to love my crocheting

Since I am really starting to enjoy crocheting as I've learned more and gotten better I decided it was time to create a blog just for talking about and sharing my projects. Right now I'm still a basic crocheter. I am a Red Heart Super Saver person. I'm cheap and I can't believe the prices for some yarns. Plus that's what WalMart sells and I don't go many other places. I've recently fell in love with granny squares. and I'm about to start 2 big granny squares for baby afghans to give as gifts to 2 friends expecting baby boys this summer.
